Traveling outside the U.S. and all the culinary delights that go with it are wonderful things; there is a down side… coming home to the “Americanized†version of the dishes you delighted in while on your trip.
A couple of years ago I traveled to Venice and stayed on Lido, a small island just outside the city limits. It was on that island that I ventured out for lunch one day. I wanted to get something small, just so I would satiate my hunger and be sustained till dinner at a highly recommended restaurant. So, I ordered pizza, nothing special just cheese and pepperoni.
I was wrong, it was special. Aside from the ultra fresh toppings, I did not get a slice as I had presumed. Instead, I got a pizza that was the size of a dinner plate. Another surprise to me, the crust was so thin it had to be eaten with a fork as there was no possible way to pick up the delightful confection.
Now, back home, when my friends and co-workers ask me all the time if I would like to order out for pizza, I just cringe. A staple, on the go food stuff is no longer acceptable and makes me, frankly, sad. If only I could call up Lido long distance and have them overnight me a few, I would gladly pay!
Till next time… that’s My Life With Food.
